Career Experience
For the last few years, I’ve chosen work that would prepare me to be a good teacher. The first job I got with this mindset was my job as a peer mentor. In my student meetings I learned how to have empathy, how to listen instead of explain, and how to build relationships that allowed students to be vulnerable with me. During my time as a mentor, I also learned skills like effective time management and clear communication as I was responsible for setting up meetings with 8-12 students every week. I also worked as a physics TA and as a physics demonstrations assistant. As a TA, I was able to help create a new physics course by giving suggestions for assignments, giving feedback on exams, and writing homework questions. As a demonstrations assistant I have become comfortable with using over 400 physics demonstrations, learned how to use them in lectures, and suggested them to professors. I also got involved in physics education research. I began my research writing two new labs and implementing them during the semester. I then analyzed the results from those labs and presented them at a student research conference. I was also a lab instructor for the same course and was able to teach students my own labs. This research has helped me to connect with scientific literature and my time as a lab instructor has prepared me to guide student learning through labs in my own classroom. Most recently I have worked as an intern teacher at teaching AP Physics, physics, and astronomy. I have developed a lot of curriculum myself and borrowed some from other teachers as well. Creating and running three different courses as an intern has been a challenging experience that I believe has prepared me well to become an awesome tutor.
