Academics
Allen University is a small, faith-based institution in South Carolina that has sought to educate students who may not have had the academic preparation or financial means traditionally required to attend college, hence the motto “All That Can Be Imagined.” The 650 undergraduates that attend Allen can choose from nine majors including Business Administration, Sports Management, and Biology. There are also programs for adult and distance learners, and classes for high school students. The core values of integrity, accountability, respect, excellence, and faith are woven throughout all aspects of the college, and the school’s size affords up close and personal access to teachers, administrators, and staff.
Career
The student body is primarily first-generation and Pell Grant eligible, and the Annual UNCF Scholarship Gala is the university’s signature fundraising event to generate and provide scholarship funds. The Allen University Marching “Band of Gold” is a popular and energetic performance team that incorporates both instruments and dancers (students can even earn scholarships via marching band membership), playing at events and the school’s annual homecoming (the Allen Yellow Jackets now compete as a provisional member of Division II in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference). The Office of Student Activities offers programming, service, and experiential opportunities to help cultivate students’ minds; there are more than 35 clubs and organizations under its umbrella and nine Greek organizations. Traditional Allen University events include the appointment of Miss Allen and her court, as well as Motown, Soul Train Student Leadership Awards Ceremony, Yellow Jacket Week, the Haunted Experience, and Winter Wonderland.
Culture
The school’s Quality Enhancement Plan aims to foster oral and written presentation skills in its students to ensure success in life, and the Student Presenters Excel at Acquiring Knowledge (S.P.E.A.K.) helps with class presentations, interview preparation, speaking skills, and virtual training through small classes, workshops, and tutors. Notable alumni include numerous South Carolina legislators such as state representative William Clyburn and former state senator Kay Patterson.
