Middle Tennessee State University is a large public institution established in 1911 as a teacher training college. Over the years MTSU has become a dominant entity in higher education in the Southeast.
With over 130,000 alumni, MTSU is the largest contributor to the workforce in middle Tennessee. Currently, one college degree-holder in five in the greater Nashville area graduated from Middle Tennessee State University.
With a student/faculty ratio of 17:1, students receive a great deal of personal attention from their professors. Students may choose from more than 180 undergraduate programs of study and over 140 graduate programs. Our student body consists of a remarkably diverse population with members from almost every state and 77 foreign countries, where we've established long-term relationships with many other universities. As a state-supported university, our students receive an excellent education for a fraction of the cost when compared to comparable schools across the country.

Tennessee Miller Coliseum: This sizable venue for horse & trade shows boasts 500 stalls, 100+ RV hookups & a reception space. Historic Cannonsburgh Village: Historic Cannonsburgh Village represents approximately 100 years of early Tennessee life from the 1830s to the 1930s. Sixteen trailheads along the seven greenway sections provide access for hiking, walking, running, wading, bicycling, skating, nature photography, picnicking, birdwatching, fishing, and many other outdoor activities for individuals of all abilities. Three small watercraft launch points - two on the West Fork Stones River and one on the East Fork Stones River - provide access to the Stones River for paddlers, and two bark parks allow off-leash exercise for your canine pals. The Murfreesboro Greenway System also connects historical sites, parks, neighborhoods, and businesses and serves as a conservation corridor to preserve precious natural and cultural resources. Fountains at Gateway: Local shopping, dining, and entertainment, and is host to frequent community activities and family-friendly events ? from summer movies under the stars to our annual Winterfest celebration and ice skating in winter.

Students Say
As far as professors go, they "like to be on a first name basis" with students and often "make it a point to get to know you." Students call faculty "very helpful and fair" and "thorough in every aspect of the subject matter." One student shares, "A professor of mine teaches by walking around to every individual student and making sure they understand the subject matter." They're also "willing to circle back around if anyone in the class gets off track." Students who do find themselves needing extra assistance with coursework or concepts can rest easy: "There are a lot of programs in place to help you, such as free tutoring," and students also have "plenty of opportunities to gain a mentor" for more focused guidance during their college careers. Many say this "advising is top notch," and that MTSU takes the time to "foster an environment of care for each and every student." Overall, students agree: "This school is amazing, and it is such a hidden gem."
