The University of Maine (UMaine) offers extensive academic opportunities expected from a flagship research university, with the close-knit feel of a small college. Founded in 1865, UMaine is a land and Sea Grant institution and the flagship campus of the University of Maine System. UMaine offers the most comprehensive academic experience in the state. There are nearly 100 majors and academic programs, 75 graduate degree programs and 30 doctoral programs. Top students are invited to join the Honors College, one of the oldest and most prestigious honors college in the nation. UMaine is also the state's only public research university, housing facilities with international reputations for excellence. UMaine students have extraordinary opportunities to gain real-world experience through research and experiential learning. Our undergraduates have the opportunity to collaborate with faculty, conduct fieldwork, and participate in internships around the world. Wildlife ecology studies learn about animal behavior by working with wildlife biologists and baby black bears. Many engineering students secure co-ops that typically lead to employment immediately upon graduation and are global leaders in deepwater offshore wind energy research. Education majors have the opportunity to take advantage of urban, rural, and international student teaching opportunities, and our marine science students have the opportunity to spend a semester by the sea at our world renowned Darling Marine Center. There are over 200 student organizations such as SPIFFY, the student investment club that manages a $3.2 million real money portfolio, Greek Life, Division I athletics, and many more.

Bangor International Airport is 10 miles from campus. Taxis and rental cars are available at the airport. Concord Coach Lines bus service also stops on campus during the academic year. The Community Connector bus provides free shuttle service to downtown Orono every half-hour during the academic year and free service (with a MaineCard) to Bangor, Brewer, Old Town, Hampden and Orono. Rideshare options are available on and off campus.

Orono is approximately twenty (20) minutes north. Once leaving the airport, turn right onto Union Street. Travel approximately 1.8 miles to I-95. Take I-95 North.
From the South
Take exit 193 to Stillwater and turn right. Continue on Stillwater for .8 miles until you reach the fourth traffic light, then turn right onto College Avenue. Drive about 1 mile on College Avenue. Turn left onto Long Rd. Drive about .3 miles and the Ferland Engineering Education and Design Center will be on your right. Parking will be on your left.
From the North

Admission to the University of Maine is a highly competitive and selective process. Successful applicants are those whose scholastic achievement, intellectual curiosity, and established study habits promise success in a comprehensive university environment. Applicants may apply using the University of Maine System application, the Common Application, or UMaine's Mobile-Friendly Application. The University of Maine uses a holistic process. This process looks at the strength of high school curriculums, grades achieved, class rank, counselor recommendation, SAT or ACT score, student essay, and extracurricular involvement to evaluate for admission consideration. The University of Maine also recognizes Advance Placement tests, honors, and higher education courses. Student who pass examinations may be exempt from certain courses at UMaine.
The University of Maine has an Early Action deadline of December 1. Early Action candidates are given first consideration for the Honors College and merit scholarships awarded by the Admissions Office. All other applicants are encouraged to submit their applications and all supporting documents by March 1, and are notified by rolling admission.
Students should also submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1st to be considered for the maximum possible financial aid eligibility. UMaine's School Code for the FAFSA is 002053.

UMaine offers nearly 100 majors and programs across six colleges at the undergraduate level: The College of Education and Human Development; College of Engineering; College of Liberals Arts and Sciences; College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture; the Maine Business School and the School of Engineering Technology. UMaine also offers the Explorations program which is designed to help undecided students identify a major best fit for a degree program to pursue. The Division of Lifelong Learning offers online classes, Summer University session, and distance-learning opportunities for students who need a flexible class schedule.
Students at the University of Maine benefit from a solid liberal arts foundation in addition to their major or concentration within their degree program. Students develop and refine the qualities needed in order to fully engage with the world around them, regardless of the discipline being studied.
Undergraduate research is a major component of the learning atmosphere. The University of Maine offers students true hands on research experience, as early as their first year on campus. UMaine is the state's largest research university providing rich and diverse opportunities to publish findings, travel around the globe, and work alongside UMaine's world-class scholars and researchers. Up in the Northeast corner of the United States, the University of Maine is a public research university with "all the opportunities of a large state school, while having the atmosphere of a small school." Students majoring in Business, Engineering, Marine Sciences, Forestry, Animal Science, Music, and Education majors all rave about their departments, but they also say that with nearly 100 majors, minors and degree programs, "the class choices are amazing." The great value is another draw: "UMaine provides one of the most affordable university educations in the area" with "great scholarships if you have decent high school grades [and] SAT scores." As for the classes themselves, undergrads caution that "the courses are rather challenging," but there's a sense of "camaraderie and willingness to...help-not just in professors but in your peers as well." Professors are generally "passionate, helpful, and actually want to see you at their office hours," and also bring "real-world experience into their classrooms." Juniors and seniors advise that "building a relationship with faculty is key" to success both at UMaine and beyond as they "are eager to recruit students to help with their [own] research" and provide connections to outside jobs and research positions in their fields. Other hands-on learning opportunities abound at UMaine, with some examples including "drilling through the ice to collect sediment samples" on a frozen lake and caring for "horses and dairy cows" on the university farm. Students also find "well-established connections outside of college" in the form of hospital internships to placements at local primary schools. Because of this, students seeking "opportunity and a sense of community" find this campus to "feel like home."

Students get a full and enriching college experience at UMaine. The University of Maine hosts many on-campus programs and opportunities for students to explore and meet new people. Students can kayak, ski, snowshoe, canoe, hike, and much more. 15 miles of walking, biking, and cross country ski trails surround UMaine's beautiful campus. There are also over 200 clubs and organizations for students to get involved in, such as Greek Life, The Woodsmen's Club, Robotics Club, Spanish Club and countless more. The Campus Activities and Student Engagement puts on free events during the school year including movies, karaoke, game nights, and astronomy shows. You can join an athletic team or cheer on the UMaine Black Bears Division I teams to victory for free during the year. In fact, the Wall Street Journal names UMaine's Alfond Arena the best atmosphere in college hockey.

UMaine's "campus is filled with very welcoming people" who are "down to earth," "helpful," "hardworking," and, as one undergrad phrases it, "wicked friendly." The student body hails "mostly from the state of Maine or the surrounding New England area" and is predominantly white. Yet students emphasize that the campus is diverse, maintaining a "significant LGBT+ presence on campus" and a mix of social classes, religions, and political affiliations. Whatever the background, most students "share the love and passion of the outdoors." Additionally, one student tells us, "Everyone has their own different quirks and no one is judged for that." That acceptance also goes for nontraditional students. For example, the "veteran community is fantastic" and there are "many people with military partners [or] family members." Another student sums it up: "There is a unique sense of Maine here, and we are quite united under the Black Bear banner."

There's no place like Maine. Located in Orono, Maine, students are surrounded by the great outdoors and ample opportunity to explore everything that Maine has to offer. Orono is nestled between the Stillwater and Penobscot rivers and the campus has a traditional New England feel with ivy-covered brick buildings, towering pines, and beautiful fall foliage that is second to none. Some of the best skiing in the northeast is within easy driving distance. Beautiful tourist attractions such as Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Baxter State Park, and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail are just a short drive from campus. The University of Maine is also only 10 minutes from the city of Bangor, Maine's third largest city which is consistently ranked as one of the most desirable places to live for its natural beauty, safety, quality of life and affordability.

The University of Maine is home to state-of-the-art research facilities, classrooms and teaching laboratories.
Fogler Library is the state's largest library and located right in the center of campus. It houses more than 3.6 million print volumes, including government documents, as well as 1.6 million microforms. The library provides access to more than 615,000 e-books, 104,000 online serials, 380 online databases, and 154,000 media titles.
Students will also have access to the Capital Markets Training Laboratory with state-of-the-art technology and 12 Bloomberg Terminals that allow for hands-on learning in financial education.
Engineering students get the opportunity to work alongside professors and research scientists in the internationally recognized, Advanced Structures and Composite Center. Students have assisted on projects for NASA, off shore wind resources, the United States Military and "Bridge in a Backpack." The Advanced Structures and Composite Center has partnered with more than 500 national and international companies and is home to the world's largest 3D printer.
The Virtual Environment and Multimodal Interaction Laboratory (VEMI) is a research facility that combines fully immersive virtual reality with augmented reality technologies in an integrated research and development environment. Students from all interest and majors collaborate in projects in the VEMI Lab on the latest research in areas such as aging research, vision impairment research and virtual realities.
Off-Campus Opportunities
There are also many ways to explore Maine off campus as well. There is outdoor recreation, music and food festivals, museums and much more. Bangor, a 10-minute drive from campus, hosts Waterfront Concerts, the State Fair, and traveling Broadway Shows. Take a trip to Maine's famous Lobster Festival in Rockport or to Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor. There are over 120 miles of hiking trails to explore. You don't need to go far for trails, as there are 15 miles of hiking right behind UMaine's campus!
Students at the University of Maine also have many opportunities to travel abroad. Through our study abroad programs, students will be able to explore globally while enhancing their education by taking courses, volunteering, or researching. Students have traveled to China to study emerging financial markets, to Italy to learn about Renaissance art history, to Turkey to study film, and to Brazil to look at our world's diverse ecosystem. Students will have the opportunity to enhance their education and experience at UMaine with fun, enriching, on and off-campus activities.

UMaine Black Bears are a very active bunch, and "sports, especially hockey, [are] a huge part of the...culture." At games, "the student section goes crazy (in the best way)" and "the school spirit is...incredible." Additionally, the school is situated in "such a unique place" that is "super green in the summer and pure white in the winter," providing this outdoorsy student body with miles of "trails for running and biking and a river [where] people often go paddling, kayaking, swimming, and fishing." (Yes, there's an on-campus canoe rental.) Both coastal Arcadia National Park and remote Baxter State Park, where "the Appalachian Trail ends...[atop] pristine Mount Katahdin," are just an hour's drive away. The winter season is popular for cross-country and alpine skiing, snowboarding, and other sports. Other forms of physical activity are available in UMaine's recreation center, which students boast is the "best in New England" and features "tons of equipment and...classes for people of all experience levels." For those who would rather stay inside during the winter, the campus puts on free movies, "drag shows, trivia nights, [and] amazing Collins Center performances." As for nightlife, while there are plenty of parties and drinking at downtown bars on weekends, there is little pressure to partake-students say their peers are "chill and accepting of whatever you do and do not do." While the school may be in a rural environment, that doesn't mean the students are bored or lonely. As one undergrad puts it: "When everyone's in the middle of nowhere, no one is."

Documentation consisting only of a diagnosis, case or chart notes, and/or prescription notations is unacceptable. Copies of IEPs and Section 504 plans may be informative, but are not always sufficient documentation to support accommodation. Individuals conducting evaluation and rendering diagnosis must have appropriate qualifications. Documentation typically would be provided by certified and/or licensed school psychologists, clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, learning disability specialists, or other professionals with specific certification and experience in the identification of learning disabilities. The University has final authority for determining accommodations. This decision is based on the nature of the course or program, and specifics of the individual?s disability-related needs. Accommodations do not include interventions that are remedial or needed for personal care or study. Documentation of a Learning Disability must include: 1. Relevant Historical Information 2. Testing should be current, generally within the past three ? four years and scores should be included. 3. Interpretation and Diagnosis, test scores and other information gathered through the evaluation process should be synthesized by the evaluator and provide clear and specific evidence that a learning disability is present and the diagnosis. 4. Recommended Accommodations 5. Documentation must include the name and professional title(s) of the evaluator as well as the date(s) of testing. - Name, credentials, and contact information of the evaluator. - The nature of the disability and relevant history. - DSM-V or ICD-10 diagnosis with information outlining the duration, severity, treatment and expected prognosis of the condition. If the condition is temporary, the expected length of time to recovery. - Test results, including scores and written evaluation of scores (if applicable). - Describe any treatments, medications, assistive devices/services the student is currently using. Note their effectiveness and any side effects that may impact the student?s physical, perceptual, or cognitive performance. - A description of how the disability impacts engagement in day-to-day activities related to attending college. - Suggested accommodations.Special Need Services Offered
