Academics
Wiley College is a four-year liberal-arts–focused college situated on the west side of Marshall, Texas. Affiliated with The United Methodist Church, Wiley is committed to educational access for traditional and non-traditional students from diverse backgrounds. The college retains the roots of its Christian learning environment and supports spiritual, ethical, moral, and leadership development. The college is organized into four degree-granting divisions: the Division of Sciences, the Division of Education, the Division of Business and Technology, and the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities. Courses of study include business administration, criminal justice, communication, religion, music, and many others. The college’s priority is educating students for leadership and social justice, where service to humankind is encouraged and nurtured. In addition, the Division of Academic Affairs aspires to create “a world-class educational ecosystem where students attain knowledge, skills, and attitudes to compete successfully in a global industry.” The Division of General Education and Special Studies, a non-degree-granting support system, is responsible for the general education and developmental education programs and advises first-year and transfer students.
Career
A strong sense of purpose and team spirit unite those at Wiley. Students and faculty excel at lifting each other to new heights by pushing themselves and those around them to succeed. (Good news for those students with a passion for campus government, newspaper or yearbook work, or radio broadcasting.) The campus’s 16 student-led organizations (plus Greek groups and several religious clubs) not only make meaningful contributions to a healthy and vibrant campus but also provide the opportunity to use and develop individual talents and skills while making lifelong friends and staying active. The Women of Wiley, for example, engage in projects and activities throughout the year that benefit the campus and community while helping members gain confidence and self-esteem. Students can also make an athletic impact by joining one of the many Wiley Wildcat teams, which now include both a men’s and women’s golf division.
Culture
The Office of Career Services (OCS) offers services to assist students and alumni on their pathway to success. Trained counselors provide one-on-one counseling and skills workshops to prepare for interviews, fine-tune resumes, and locate jobs. A degree from Wiley can facilitate the start to an amazing career path. Graduates have become well-respected community leaders and activists and have made lasting impacts as internationally renowned musicians, scientists, and educators. Notable alumni include Opal Lee, who was nominated for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize and is known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth”; Julia Scott Reed, a journalist, editor, radio broadcaster, and the first African American columnist at the Dallas Morning News; and Walter McAfee, a scientist and mathematician who participated in Project Diana and completed the first calculations showing that radar signals could be successfully bounced from a ground-based antenna to the Moon and back.
