Academics
Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, Shaw University adheres to an important and valuable mission: to develop the next generation of global leaders in every facet of society. This means providing a well-rounded education in all areas, focusing not only not only on superior academics, but also on shaping the spiritual and ethical values of its diverse community of learners. All students receive a general education to encourage the development of high personal standards, a sense of citizenship within the school community, and a commitment to the community and country at large. Shaw offers more than thirty bachelor’s degree programs, along with several master’s degree programs. As of 1976, there’s also a robust program for adults returning to earn a degree, and eight extramural locations help to provide flexibility for those already working full-time jobs. Students have the opportunity to pursue a wide range of career paths, whether their passion lies in areas such as educating youth, advancing healthcare, steering technology, lifting up those in need, or founding the next major corporation. For those driven by a religious purpose or calling, Shaw University’s Divinity School helps shape emerging spiritual leaders with master’s degrees in divinity as well as Christian education.
Career
Shaw University offers P.R.I.D.E. to its students—that’s People Running in the Direction of Excellence. There are numerous clubs and organizations to explore, along with social events and networking functions that cater to all undergraduates throughout the academic year. Many students who have never envisioned themselves in leadership roles see their passion for service awakened at Shaw as every student is encouraged to serve on committees and help steer the growth of campus groups. Additionally, students wishing to expand their worldview and leadership skills can also take advantage of the study abroad program, a great way to grow their global understanding and perhaps discover less-traveled paths to a future career. For a small university, athletics plays a strong role in the culture of Shaw University. The Bears program includes both men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, tennis, and cross country, along with several other athletic teams. Homecoming is a beloved tradition at the school, with tailgating and events bringing the whole campus together to cheer on the NCAA Division II football squad. The Bears have notably won at least one Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship every year since 2011.
