Length 180 minutes (Students spend time between the two sections as they see fit)
Reading & Writing

  • 9–11 revising/editing questions (split between standalone questions and a series of questions based on a single passage)
  • 6 reading comprehension passages with 6–10 questions each (3–4 of these will be information, 1–2 will be literary, and 1 will be a poem)
Math

57 questions total

  • 5 grid-in questions
  • 52 multiple-choice word problems and computational questions

Scoring

1 raw point given per correct answer*

*Only 47 questions in each section are scored, with the other 10 serving as experimental questions. You will not be able to distinguish between these.

What's on the SHSAT?

The SHSAT has two sections: English Language Arts & Mathematics.

ELA Topics

English Language Arts has two parts: Revising/Editing and Reading Comprehension.

  • Revising/Editing  tests your ability to recognize and correct language errors and to improve the overall quality of a piece of writing.  
  • Reading Comprehension has 6 reading passages and tests your ability to understand, analyze, and interpret what you have read.

SHSAT Math Topics

The SHSAT Math section features word and computational problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Some problems will involve working with fractions, decimals, and statistics.

How Can I Prepare?
